The Ultimate Portable Device

A huge mega-collision is going to happen in next couple years where all the hand-held devices converge into one Uber-device. If I could combine a few existing cool products into this future Uber-device it would be built by combining the following devices:

The HP iPAQ h6315 from T-Mobile

This device gets close to being the ultimate device. It has a full QWERTY keypad, nice phone features, WiFi, Bluetooth, Infared, a built-in low res digital camera, and all kinds of cool software. I'm personally excited that you can run Flash websites and applications, can access several different email accounts, and can take snap-shot photos.

I'm bummed this device only comes with 64MB of ram. It can be expanded to 512mb but that's almost nothing if you'd like to shoot lots of picutures or store all your MP3s. The camera quality I'm sure sucks.

The Apple iPod

A 60GB hard drive is more like it for storing songs and photos. It's such a beautiful device and with such an elegant interface. Too bad it doesn't have all the featured of the iPaq listed above and something more like 250GB of disk-space. Then we'd be getting really close to the Uber-device.

The Sigma SD10 Digital SLR Camera
This is one of the most unique digital cameras on the market. It's uniqueness is owed to its use of the Foveon X3 image sensor chip. Normally digital camera CCDs take the light for a given photo, split it up into 50% green light, 25% blue light, and 25% red light; then use software to interpolate a full spectrum image. The Foveon CCD has seperate sensors allowing the camera to capture 100% of each color. The ultimate device would have the features of this camera but not the bulk of the body and lens. Of course you'd loose a bit of quality for the lack of lens size but the uber device would be more for high-quality snapshots that would be suitable for 8x10s on your wall but nothing more.

The OQO model 01 ultra personal computer
This is a kick-ass hand-held device that is running a full version of Windows XP Professional. If only this OQO had phone and camera we'd be very close to the Uber-device.

So to all you companies out there making cool powerful portable devices, go for it!

Best regards,
Tony J.
